  • Easter Island

Planning a stop there and somewhat torn between this well-regarded place:

and one of the luxe properties (including one opening end of year.)

    coming soon:

Anyone ever stay at one of the first two?

I stayed somewhere very simple for just $100 or so per night. The hotel arranged our car rental for us, and it was brought to the hotel.

I know that Explora is highly regarded, but I have an strong negative reaction to paying their rate of roughly $1000 per night. Still, I'm impressed that the hotel has so few rooms.

We are friends with a Chilean family who are good friends with the mayor of Easter Island. (At least he was in office when we visited.) It was fascinating to talk to him about the pressures of administrating an island of 3000 people which gets strong international scrutiny as one of the world's great heritage sites. He had proposals from international hotel developers who wanted to build hotel/golf course combinations on the island. Although existing hotels were quite spartan, yet expensive for the quality, he was opposed to construction of anything that would alter the nature of the island.

While the place is very, very expensive-- it certainly doesn't appear to be that price:

(and it's all inclusive; tours, food, bar, transfers)

BTW, funny enough, I also sat next to that mayor guy on a flight to Easter Island in 2002ish!

For what it's worth (probably not much), National Geographic has a private jet round the world tour for $50,000/person that stops at Easter Island. They stay at Hanga Roa Hotel, Iorana Hotel, and Taha Tai Hotel. http://www.nationalgeographicexpeditions.com/486.html

          Actually, that's quite interesting-- thanks!

I can't wait until I finally make a trip to Easter Island. That is on my need to visit list. Hope it will be as great for me as it has been for everyone else!

BTW, did end up staying at the above place and it was delightful and a great place in every way. I would say though that one really must get the upstairs room (the most "expensive" one of the three.)

I should add that if you stay at Te'ora, you _really_ want the upstairs room, if at all possible, it has a private balcony-- very nice for relaxing after a long day of touring:

Planning another trip to Easter Island if I can find some mileage seats. Most probably will stay at the lovely place I did last time, although I'm tempted to check out the new Explora.. if anyone encounters any on-line reviews of same, please post 'em.

Surprisingly there are a few on trip advisor-normally low end travellers there.
